ITINERARY -- Classic Inca Trail Trek
Day #1: Depart home cities; arrive Lima late on Day 1 or early morning Day 2.
Day #2: Early morning flight to Cuzco; transfer and rest in hotel; afternoon tour of Cuzco sites including the Temples of the Sun and the Moon, the Plaza de Armas, and Sacsayhuaman; group welcome dinner; overnight, local hotel. (D)
Day #3: Morning departure from Cuzco by bus for tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas; arrive at Pisac for the famous Pisac market; group lunch in Yucay or Urubamba; after lunch board bus for a tour of the famous ruins at Ollantaytambo, the scene of one of the last great battles between the Spaniards and the Incas; overnight in the Sacred Valley. Day #4: Board private bus for Chilca where we’ll cross the Urubamba River at km88 and begin our trek on the Inca Trail; lunch along the Trail; camp at Llactapata; dinner in camp. (B, L, D)
Day #5: Breakfast in camp; long, steady uphill grade today; lunch along the Trail; camp at Llulluchapampa; dinner in camp. (B, L, D)
Day #6: Breakfast in camp; cross Warmiwayñusca ("Dead Woman's Pass"), the highest point along the Trail (13,700 ft. msl); lunch along the Trail; visit the ruins at Sayacmarca; pass through the Inca Tunnels along the way to Phuyupatamarca; camp at Phuyupatamarca; dinner in camp. (B, L, D)
Day #7: Breakfast in camp; early morning views of Nevado Salkantay, one of the highest mountains in the area (more than 21,000 ft. msl); continue along the Trail past the ceremonial baths at Phuyupatamarca to the ruins at Wiñay Wayna; stop for lunch at Inti Punku (the "Sun Gate"), where we’ll enjoy our first views of the ruins at Machu Picchu; continue along the Trail arriving in Machu Picchu by mid-afternoon; balance of afternoon free to explore Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes; overnight, hotel in Aguas Calientes. Day #8: Early morning guided tour of Machu Picchu ruins; afternoon exploring/hiking on your own at Machu Picchu, optional hike to the top of Huayna Picchu and the Temple of the Sun; late afternoon departure from Machu Picchu Station for return by train to Cuzco; group farewell dinner, overnight, local hotel. Day #9: Breakfast at hotel; morning transfer to airport, flight to Lima. Hotel day room provided in Miraflores. Afternoon free to explore Lima and Miraflores. Optional visit to the Gold Museum to see Inca artifacts, relics and mummies; balance of day and evening in the upscale suburb of Miraflores where there are nice shops and restaurants to visit. Late evening return to airport for international flight. (B)
Day #10: Arrive home cities late morning to early afternoon.
